The internet has lots of good advice and great recipes and once you understand the key rules to follow then you can make informed decisions and choose wisely. This is all the info I wanted / needed when my teenager went vegan.
Hot tip: Going vegan is way more than just eating the rainbow.
Here are a couple of points to help the conversation:
Q. Is this really important to you?
Q. Are you willing to try new things, and put the effort in?
Q. Are you aware that this is a really serious undertaking and has ramifications for your physical and mental well-being if you don’t do it the right way?
A. If this is important to you, let's do this.
What does 'willing to try new things' mean?
Are they prepared to do what it takes? I can show you (both) what 100% protein and 100% iron on a plant-based diet looks like in a day.
Kids like a Challenge. Check out the free download and tell them to head to the kitchen. This will help them to decide if they are prepared to do what it takes to eat a vegan diet.
Our relationship (yours and mine) might end here - they might decide this isn't for them just yet!
Our kids want to be vegan to save the animals and help the environment.
While we love the sentiment, we are more worried about how we are going to get time to clean the house after basketball and before the in-laws turn up.
Regardless of what I thought (which was only informed by the media), I said, ‘let’s find out if it is actually ok for a teenager or not first’, thinking it can’t possibly be ok for a 14yo girl, and we could then go back to normal. She can go be vegan when she moves out and I won’t have to manage it.
But then I would have missed out on the best thing that ever happened for our relationship!
- Paula- Brisbane (No longer stressed)
My teenager wanted to go vegan. I didn't say No straight away.
What followed is something I wouldn't have missed out on for the world.
Do you remember being a teenager?
No-one understood how you were feeling? More attention was on your other siblings?
I remember wanting to know why I wasn’t allowed to do something. The phrase “because I said so!” might be familiar to you. Friendships were a minefield. You didn’t feel you could talk to your parents because they were busy, and wouldn’t understand anyway – they were so old fashioned. .......and now here we are.
I wouldn’t be a teenager again if you paid me. But I am living with one. Kids these days are much braver than we were (no more sitting quietly in the corner for this generation!) and they have information coming at them from all angles.
We were excited about getting a pen that had 5 different colours!
It is really hard to impress kids these days. I found a way to impress mine.
